Changes in an aging parent rarely happen all at once. More often, they show up as small things that are easy to explain away. Paying gentle attention to them can help you step in before a small problem becomes a crisis.
Things worth noticing
· The kitchen. Is the fridge nearly empty, or full of expired food? Are meals being skipped?
· The mail. Stacks of unopened bills or late notices can signal that keeping up has become hard.
· Medications. Pill bottles that are too full, or empty too soon, may mean doses are being missed or doubled.
· The house. A home that used to be tidy and now isn’t often means chores have become physically difficult.
· Personal care. Wearing the same clothes repeatedly, or changes in hygiene.
· Mobility. Holding onto furniture to get around, new bruises, or a recent fall.
· Mood. Withdrawing from friends, church or hobbies they used to love.
How to bring it up
Lead with love, not a list of problems. Try something like, “I want to make sure you can keep living here comfortably. Is anything getting harder?” Listen more than you talk.
You don’t have to decide alone
Noticing these signs doesn’t mean your parent has to leave home. Often, a few hours of help each week makes a real difference. Aroga Home Care is always happy to talk through what you’re seeing, with no pressure.
